Dr. Michael Longaker is the Deane P. and Louise Mitchell Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, Director of Children’s Surgical Research, Director of the Program in Regenerative Medicine, and the CoDirector of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.
Dr. Longaker has published extensively in the areas of tissue fibrosis, skin scarring, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. He spends 90% of his time dedicated to research activities. He is also board certified in General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and performed a fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery.
As a postdoc, Dr. Longaker discovered that early-gestation embryonic wounds heal without a scar and transition to scar formation late in gestation. In 2015, his laboratory identified a fibroblast lineage that is responsible for dermal fibrosis in adult mice (Engrailed1). Recently, Dr. Longaker’s group has shown that blocking Engrailed1 activation postnatally yields wound regeneration without scarring.
