February is #RaynaudsAwarenessMonth, so let’s discuss the relationship between #RaynaudsPhenomenon and #scleroderma.
Raynaud’s phenomenon is a common condition, and most people with Raynaud’s will not develop scleroderma. The majority of people living with Raynaud’s have the primary form, with symptoms of cold hands and feet and painful attacks in response to changes in temperature or stress. In primary Raynaud’s, there is no link to any other condition.
But, worldwide nearly 90% of those with scleroderma DO have Raynaud’s symptoms. This is called secondary Raynaud’s (meaning it’s caused by another condition). Someone who has Raynaud’s and scleroderma may be prone to more serious complications, such as digital ulcers.
Raynaud’s can be a “red flag” that helps lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment of scleroderma. That’s why it’s so important to understand the link between the two conditions and to keep monitoring the severity of your Raynaud’s, as it could be an early sign of scleroderma.
