
A new study published in Cell Reports, led by Montserrat Anguera, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and supported by an SRF Postdoctoral grant awarded to co-author Nikhil Jiwrajka, MD, sheds light on how immune cells maintain X chromosome silencing, which is a process that breaks down in lupus and other female-biased autoimmune diseases.
By uncovering this mechanism, the findings may help explain why autoimmune diseases like scleroderma occur far more often in women.
